Updated: Jan 6

Author and photographer Stan Johnson reading his Beautiful, I Am Book

In a world where societal pressures often distort perceptions of beauty, artist and fine arts photographer Stan Johnson is redefining the narrative. His new book, Beautiful, I Am, is a heartfelt celebration of Black beauty and self-esteem. Through stunning portraits and personal reflections, Johnson invites readers on a journey to discover the inherent radiance within themselves. This groundbreaking project, spanning generations, showcases the strength, diversity, and individuality of Black women while encouraging a deeper appreciation of one’s own worth.

Born and raised in Quincy, Florida—a small town west of Tallahassee in Gadsden County, Johnson’s upbringing and life experiences deeply shaped his artistic vision. With a passion for storytelling through photography, he has dedicated his career to uplifting the beauty and resilience of his community. In this exclusive interview, Johnson shares the inspiration behind his work, the challenges of completing the project, and the powerful message he hopes to leave with readers.

Growing Up in Quincy

Stan Johnson reflects on his roots with a mix of nostalgia and honesty. “Growing up in Quincy, I was part of a very nurturing community, but it wasn’t without its challenges,” he says. As a child in a predominantly Black county, he witnessed firsthand the impact of racism and systemic inequities. These experiences left a lasting impression on him, shaping his perspective and fueling his desire to tell authentic stories through art.

“Photography became my vehicle,” Johnson explains. “It allows me to capture the essence of people’s stories and create projects that resonate deeply.”

The Origins of Beautiful, I Am

The inspiration for Beautiful, I Am stems from a study conducted in the 1940s by Kenneth and Mamie Clark, known as the Doll Study. This research revealed that Black children, influenced by societal bias, often viewed white dolls more positively than Black dolls. Tragically, when the study was replicated in the 1990s with similar results, it became clear that the negative impact of societal standards on self-esteem persisted.

“That discovery stayed with me,” Johnson admits. “I wanted to create something that countered that narrative—something that would highlight the beauty and strength of our people.”

From this desire, the concept for Beautiful, I Am was born. Johnson’s goal was ambitious: to photograph 100 individuals, spanning every decade of life from infancy to old age, and showcase their unique beauty.

A Labor of Love

The project was not without its challenges. “Coordinating and scheduling 100 people was a monumental task,” Johnson says with a laugh. Despite aiming for ten participants per decade, he ultimately captured 96 subjects, ranging from a one-year-old child to a 94-year-old elder.

“The response was incredible,” he shares. “People gave their time, their stories, and their trust. It was a privilege to photograph them and show their beauty to the world.”

Empowering Black Women

One of Johnson’s primary motivations for the project was to uplift Black women, who he believes are often underrepresented or misrepresented in media. “Our society doesn’t showcase the beauty of Black women the way it should,” he says. “I want every Black woman who opens this book to see herself, to feel celebrated, and to know—without a doubt—that she is beautiful.”

Looking Ahead: The Solo Exhibition

In addition to the release of Beautiful, I Am, Johnson is preparing for a solo exhibition at Florida A&M University’s Foster Tanner Fine Arts Building. Opening January 16th, 2025, the exhibition will feature two of his projects: Beautiful, I Am and Naked Emotions Exposed.

“This exhibition is a milestone,” Johnson says proudly. “It’s the first all-photography show hosted at this venue, and it’s a chance to explore two aspects of mental health—self-esteem and emotional expression. Both projects aim to uplift our community and showcase the full range of humanity within Black people.”

A Legacy of Positivity

For Johnson, his work is about more than art—it’s about building a legacy. “I believe in the power of positivity,” he says. “When we unify and embrace who we are, we can project our greatness to the world.”

As Beautiful, I Am prepares to hit shelves, Johnson remains focused on his mission to inspire, uplift, and empower. Through his art, he reminds us all: beauty is not just about appearance; it’s about embracing the light within.

As Stan Johnson poured his heart into creating Beautiful, I Am, he knew the power of this project extended beyond his vision. The book doesn’t just showcase stunning photography—it tells the stories of the women behind the lens, capturing their essence, resilience, and unique beauty.

Each portrait is a testament to the diversity and strength of Black women across generations. To bring this vision to life, Stan invited women from all walks of life to share their stories and perspectives on beauty, self-acceptance, and empowerment.

Here are the voices of a few women featured in this groundbreaking project, each reflecting on what beauty means to them and the transformative power of Beautiful, I Am.

Redefining Beauty on My Own Terms

For Natasha Sarjeant, a feature in the Beautiful, I Am portrait and voices book, embracing beauty meant redefining the narrative.

The concept of beauty has taught me to embrace my individuality and reject unrealistic standards. As a short, bald, curvy Black woman with batwings, I’ve learned to find confidence in my unique features and unapologetic attitude. Society often pressures women, especially Black women, to fit a narrow mold—tall, size 2, flat tummy, big breasts, big booty, long hair—but I’ve realized true beauty lies in authenticity. I celebrate my body, my spirit, and my journey, knowing my worth isn’t defined by someone else’s ideal. Confidence in my skin has shaped me into a woman who shines unapologetically.

A Journey to Self-Acceptance

For Cynthia Portalatin, Beautiful, I Am represents more than just a book—it’s a transformative reminder of the beauty within women of color.

“Seeing other women of color represented in this book has solidified my belief in our collective beauty,” Cynthia shares. “Growing up, I didn’t always see myself as pretty or beautiful. Society often defines beauty through the lens of the majority population, and I didn’t fit that mold. I didn’t feel like I fit in anywhere, and for a long time, I felt like I wasn’t enough.”

The book’s inclusivity and celebration of diverse shades and hues across generations deeply resonated with her. “I’m over the moon about this project. It exemplifies the beauty of women of color through the decades. Being part of this publication is such an honor,” she reflects.

Cynthia’s journey to self-acceptance took time and self-reflection. “It took me years to embrace my worth and beauty. I wish this book had existed when I was younger—it could have saved me so much time and self-doubt. Hearing from other women of all ages and experiences is invaluable. I truly believe this book should be required reading for young girls,” she emphasizes.

Her appreciation for the project stems from its unique approach. “There are books that celebrate the beauty of women, of people of color, but this is the first time I’ve seen one that spans almost 100 years of life and captures the essence of beauty at every age. It’s really special. The more women who can see themselves reflected in something like this, the better.”

When asked about her experience being part of the project, Cynthia describes it as effortless and rewarding. “It was such a comfortable, enjoyable process. I’m used to being behind the camera, interviewing others, so being on the other side was a unique experience for me. But Stan made it easy—I felt at ease sharing my thoughts on beauty, how my perceptions have evolved, and how I’ve grown more confident over the years.

Beautiful, I Am is more than a book—it’s a movement celebrating the beauty, strength, and individuality of Black women across generations. Through his artistry and vision, Stan Johnson has created a timeless masterpiece that uplifts and empowers, inviting readers to see themselves through a lens of authenticity and pride.

As the women featured in this book reflect on their personal journeys, their stories remind us all that beauty transcends societal standards—it is found in confidence, resilience, and self-love. With this project, Stan Johnson has not only captured stunning images but also sparked meaningful conversations about identity and empowerment.
